Geek Speak – LoveLansing: Roller Derby Invades Downtown
by Daniel
LoveLansing is a blog series on what makes the Lansing area a fun and unique place to live.
Nearly a month ago, I attended the first ever home bout for the Lansing Derby Vixens. It was a hell of a good time. And better yet: it was in downtown Lansing. The bout took place at the Lansing Center–and it sold out. Scalpers were asking for tickets as I walked into the building, which was the last thing I expected to see.
OK. I take that back. The last thing I expected to see was the “suicide seats” on the edge of the track. Aptly named, as any derby girl who lost her footing could crash right into you.
The event made for some fun photo ops, although I had to crank my ISO more than I really wanted in order to get enough light to capture the fast action. Hence some of the artifacts in the photos. Oh well.
I cross-processed a few of these too.
The event was a lot of fun–and I was able to have a great evening out downtown. My party walked over to the Nuthouse for dinner and crossed the street for the bout at the Lansing Center. Post-bout, we swung by the Corner Bar to check out the after party (which I sadly could not attend for too long–a cold was beginning to dig its claws into me).
The next home bout is May 7th and I plan on going.
We have a brand new podcast for ya tomorrow, featuring Lansing NOISE‘s sports columnist Andi Osters. She’s coming on to talk March Madness and try to help me understand what all the fuss is about. I can’t get into basketball, but I live and breath hockey.
