Geek Speak – LoveLansing: Lansing Give Camp 2011
by Daniel
LoveLansing is a blog series on what makes the Lansing area a fun and unique place to live.
As mentioned on last week’s podcast, I volunteered at Lansing Give Camp over the weekend. What is Give Camp? Web designers and developers volunteer–and give up their weekend–to build a new website for a non-profit group. We interviewed Carla McWherter back in podcast 008. She runs Give Camp along with her husband, Jeff.
We spent the weekend in the basement of Impression 5 Science Center in downtown Lansing–which meant we had the run of the place after it closed (read: fun with trebuchets). Some folks stayed the night, and actually slept near the exhibits. It was three days of work, play, and snacks. Oh yes. The snacks. We did not go hungry at Give Camp.
But, we worked hard too. I was on the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council (Mid-MEAC) team.
This is my team (counter-clockwise from Left): Kathleen, Amelia and Ali. Yes, I was the token dude.
As you can see here, there were a lot of folks helping out. I think I heard around a 100 or so.
Snacks!
More fun with a 10-22mm lens (thanks for letting me borrow it, Betsy Weber!).
There were plenty of non-developer volunteers too. They made sure we were fed, hydrated, and picked up our trash. Thanks! A huge thanks to Carla and Jeff for putting on such a great event. You guys are awesome.
Oh, and here is the final website we came up with. That link is only temporary, as it should be up at http://www.midmeac.org soon, if not already. My biggest contribution to the site was making the slides for the slide show (I edited some existing photos–thank goodness for the Cut Out filter).
