Geek Speak – LoveLansing: Michigan State University Surplus Store
by Daniel
LoveLansing is a blog series on what makes the Lansing area a fun and unique place to live.
Have you ever seen the film Citizen Kane? No? Get on it, slacker. Anyway, there is a scene in Citizen Kane which came to mind upon my first visit to the Michigan State University Surplus Store. The scene in question showcases rooms upon rooms of works of art and artifacts Kane has collected over the years. Such is the case with MSU Surplus Store–there is a lot of stuff.
For those unfamiliar, the MSU Surplus Store is where the college sells off their extra items they no longer need: chairs, desks, books–you name it. There is a wide variety of items. It makes for a fun visit, even if you don’t buy anything. It is similar to going to a Salvation Army or a Goodwill store, but times ten (and with fewer clothes).
Seriously. Head out there. It is worth your time. The selection is vast and strange, just like my extended family. The MSU Surplus Store has unique hours, so keep that in mind: Tuesdays 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. And here is a map to the location.
Remember though: some of the items aren’t in the best shape. There is a reason you can get a chair for $3 or a bike for $15. But, there are treasures to be found–including laboratory equipment ::evil scientist laugh::

You aren’t kidding. That place is lots of fun…so many hidden treasures.
You bet! Crazy stuff everywhere you look. Made for some good photo ops. I have some other shots somewhere..hmm. Need to find those.
