Kitty Corner – Ask Kat: Styling an A-line Skirt

by Kat

So a while ago, in the midst of the 30 for 30 Challenge, I asked some people on Twitter if they had any wardrobe items they had trouble styling and offered my help. A few people responded, but my friend Carin (who music directed me in Gypsy) sent a pic of a cute pink-y preach Banana Republic skirt with white and gold stripes she’d like to wear more, but has trouble styling.

Sorry it’s so late, Carin, but here’s three outfit options to try with this cute skirt:

This skirt has a great a-line that’s flattering on many people. You don’t want to lose that waist by layering overly blousey or heavy items over it. Tops should be form-fitting or have a very defined waistline.

1. The fun, flirty summer look:

This is light and breezy, the color won’t compete with the delicate shade of the skirt, and a brown leather belt and sandals would finish the look out nicely.

2. The professional look:

I know you’re a stay-at-home Mom, but you also get out to events, church, etc. A top like this one in a soft, complementary color to the peach of the skirt would both look sharp and be comfortable. Doesn’t hurt that this shade is super hot for fall! I’d finish this look off with a slender nude belt and nude pumps to look really chic.

3. A cozy fall look:

This would be perfect for family pictures or Thanksgiving Day – I’d layer, button at the waist, maybe add a dark brown leather belt and some chocolate colored knee high boots in either a flat, wedge or kitten heel – you know, so you could still chase the kiddos around in them!

With each look, a simple gold necklace or bracelet would tie the whole thing together. Anyone else got some suggestions for Carin? Leave ‘em in the comments!

Thank you!! I love your suggestions! See, I was stuck in such a rut. I have a white J Crew shirt similar to the one you pictured, but I never thought to put a belt with it to help tie them together. And I love the idea of using complementary colors on top (in my mind’s I’ve been trapped in “I’ll never find pink or gold to match this!). This was just what I needed to kick me into gear! Thank you!
